The Haven Gateway

The Haven - a private educational institute on Gabriola Island - is a centre for transformative learning. Its logo is the symbol of a circle. Working literally with this symbol in profile, this gateway building is designed to welcome visitors to the institute, forming a half-circle as a welcoming gesture to the entrance of the campus. The building’s practical function houses electrical services for the 15 acre campus, while also forming a bus shelter for visitors. Shaped fir posts support three large, ellipsoidal glulam beams that form a triangular structure that arches high over the entry roadway. Horizontal red cedar folds over to make a protected bench at the bus shelter, and the building is clad in western red cedar shingles, which are sympathetic to the image that the Haven promotes of a living and environmentally-connected institution.
