Comet House is an optimistic and romantic endeavour. This off-grid residential design is driven by its owners’ passion for stars, sun and the raw landscapes of Northern Colorado’s high-altitude rangelands. The house serves as a culmination for a life in amateur astronomy along with an appreciation for the dramatic western landscape. She is a photographer and film-maker impassioned by the land and light; he is a serious amateur astronomer wanting to watch the stars visible in the exceptionally dark skies available there. Via the internet, a domed observatory roof can be opened and rotated by remote control and a high-powered 18-inch diameter telescope manipulated to watch the starts on a computer screen anywhere. All this is possible without telecom wires or links to the power grid, as the house is entirely solar powered and connected to the world via satellite up-link.
